INTERNATIONAL DUEL MARKS THE RETURN OF LA RUTA DE LA TRAMUNTANA TO ROSES
The French team aboard Aquilon, a VLC 35 skippered by Benoit Gautier of Club de Vela Golfus, claimed overall victory in the 33rd edition of La Ruta de la Tramuntana, the third scoring event of the 2026 Ausmar Regattas Circuit.
On June 5 and 6, the 33rd edition of La Ruta de la Tramuntana was held. Co-organized by Enregata, Club Nàutic El Balís and Club d'Esports Nàutics GEN Roses, the regatta was sponsored by the Costa Brava Girona Tourism Board and maritime security company AUSMAR, with the collaboration of the Catalan Sailing Federation, Port Roses and Roses Town Council. The competition once again linked the Maresme coast and the Costa Brava through a 60-nautical-mile coastal passage and a technical race contested in the Bay of Roses.
The main novelty of this edition was the return of Roses as the finishing port and venue for the coastal race, bringing the event back to a location that had already hosted the regatta between 2005 and 2008.
The competition got underway on Friday from Club Nàutic El Balís in very favourable sailing conditions, marked by a south-easterly wind of around 12 knots that accompanied the fleet for much of the course. The most demanding section came during the night, when the wind strength decreased considerably near the Bay of Roses, forcing crews to pay close attention to tactical decisions during the final stages of the race.
Line honours in this first race went to Aquilon, the VLC 35 skippered by Benoit Gautier of Club de Vela Golfus, which completed the 60-nautical-mile course between Club Nàutic El Balís and Port Roses in 12 hours and 29 minutes. Thanks to this result, the French yacht was awarded the Club Nàutic El Balís Trophy as the real-time winner of the first race. The French team also secured first place on corrected time, followed by the Belgian crew aboard Diabolic, a Sun Fast 35 from the Royal Belgium Sailing Club, and Rauxa, an X-35 from Club Nàutic El Balís.
The action continued on Saturday with the second race. Given the weather forecast, the Race Committee decided to shorten the course from 12 to 10 nautical miles. The fleet sailed in light south-easterly winds of between 6 and 8 knots in a highly tactical race held in the waters of the Bay of Roses.
In this second race, Glop, a First 50 skippered by Jordi Casamada of Club Nàutic l'Escala, earned the Roses Town Council Trophy as the real-time winner.
Once the handicap coefficients had been applied and the results of both races combined, Aquilon, skippered by Benoit Gautier, was crowned overall winner of the 33rd edition of La Ruta de la Tramuntana, claiming the prestigious Costa Brava Girona Tourism Board Trophy awarded to the overall champion.
It was an extremely close victory that required the use of the tie-break system established in the Sailing Instructions, as the French crew aboard Aquilon had achieved a first place in the long race and a second place in the short race, while the Belgian team aboard Diabolic had secured a second place in the long race and a first place in the short race. The tie-break was ultimately resolved in favour of the French team, as the Sailing Instructions assign a higher scoring coefficient to the long race.
Behind Aquilon and Diabolic, third place on the podium went to Aral, a Dehler 34 JV skippered by Ferran Teva of Club Nàutic El Balís.
In the Training category, intended for sailing school and charter yachts, victory went to Pekas X MásNavega, a JOD 35 skippered by Pep Navarro of CM Port Olímpic. Meanwhile, Pazzidea, an X-37 skippered by Emili Castillo of Club Vela Mataró, took victory in the Promotion category.
Due to the high level of female participation recorded in this edition, the organisers also decided to establish the Salina Category, reserved for boats with at least 50% female crew members. The Salina Category Trophy was awarded to Saxo, an X-302 co-skippered in the A2 division by Pol Fernández and Ana Rosa Ieno of Club de Mar Port Olímpic.
Thanks to the collaboration that the organisation has maintained for the third consecutive year with the Royal Spanish Assembly of Yacht Captains (RAECY), the RAECY Best Yacht Captain Trophy was awarded to Vyacheslav Korniltsev Turchin, crew member aboard Rauxa.
The prize-giving ceremony brought the regatta to a close in an exceptional setting. Sailors, accompanying guests and institutional representatives gathered under the porch of the Roses Fishermen’s Guild to celebrate a ceremony that confirmed the success of the event’s return to the Empordà town seventeen years after its last visit.
The ceremony was attended by Jordi Masquef, Sports Deputy of the Girona Provincial Council and First Vice-President of the Costa Brava Girona Tourism Board; Sílvia Ripoll, Second Deputy Mayor of Roses and Councillor for Culture and Festivals; Pere Juanola, member of the Board of Directors of Port Roses; Miquel Delclòs, Board Member of the Catalan Sailing Federation; Francesc Abad, Vice-President of the Roses Fishermen’s Guild; Juan Álvarez de Lara, RAECY Delegate in Catalonia; and Jordi Batlle, President of GEN Roses.
With the completion of La Ruta de la Tramuntana, the Ausmar Regattas Circuit reaches the halfway point of the 2026 season. The provisional championship standings will be announced in the coming days, while the next events on the calendar will be the Regata Rei en Jaume on September 12 and the Golden Cup Badalona, which will take place on October 30.
