This runner-up will allow the young sailor of GEN Roses to climb the Optimist A group to participate in the Catalan Light Sailing Circuit
The Grup d’Esports Nàutics (GEN) Roses organized this past weekend 24-25 May, the Catalonia Optimist B championship aimed at young sailors who want to climb the Optimist A group and be able to compete in the Catalan Light Sailing Circuit.
And in the Bay of Roses, 46 sailors between 8 and 15 years old, from all over Catalonia, met to achieve the goal of group climbing.
And after on Saturday the participants could not sail because the strength of the wind was stronger than allowed, which are 18 knots maximum as they are new and very young, on Sunday they could be held “thanks to the thermal wind, which never fails us in Roses, a total of four races, twice the two that, at least, must be disputed to give validity to the championship”, explained the sports director of GEN Roses, Albert Mas Martí.
And the sailor of the Grup d’Esports Nàutics, Jana Bonet, was proclaimed runner-up of Catalonia, being behind Lia Comas, of the Club Nàutic l’Estartit, who was the champion, and ahead of Blanca Chavarria, of the Club Nàutic Masnou, who was in third position.
All will be able, next year, to sail in the Catalan Light Sailing Circuit when they climb the Optimist A group. The organization of this Optimist B Catalonia Sailing Championship became a success for the Roses Nautical Sports Group, not only because of the result of Laia Bonet, but because the Catalan Sailing Federation trusted the Rosinc Sailing Club to carry it out. “In GEN, as a philosophy, what we do is promote the sport of sailing and basic Windsurfing, therefore, we are delighted and it has been fantastic to have organized this Optimist B championship, which is where sailors start in the world of regattas, in the world of light sailing”, said Albert Mas Martí.
The awards ceremony was given by the mayor of Roses, Josep Maria Martínez, the president of the GEN, Jordi Batlle, the Secretary of the Catalan Sailing Federation, Meritxell Cornudella, and the Councilor for Sports, Miguel Muñoz.
Batlle stressed, addressing the participants, that “the GEN Roses has been where you have made your first sailing competition, but surely in the coming years you will play many more championships, so I hope you all to continue sailing and enjoying this sport”. For his part, the mayor of Roses said that “from the City Council we have a very sensitive look and close to everything that is nautical sports”, and in this sense he pointed out that “we are working very intensely with the Department of Sports to expand everything that is beach sports too, in addition to water sports”.
