Net Casting and Fish Stew: the Seafaring Essence of Roses
The Montecarlo band will kick off the celebration of the Saint Peter festival in Roses with a dance on Friday, June 27 (10 p.m.), in Sant Pere Square.
The next day, starting at 9:30 a.m., the traditional Tirada de l’artó will take place on Rastrell Beach. This is a type of beach seine fishing that is no longer practiced but was once common among the fishermen of Roses. It involves casting the net from the beach and pulling it back to catch fish. It was traditionally a subsistence activity, not commercial, as the small catches were shared among the fishermen.
For years now, the fishermen of Roses have offered this demonstration in a festive atmosphere to celebrate Saint Peter’s Day, remembering a way of life and paying tribute to the people of the sea who survived thanks to this hard work.
After the activity, the Roses Fishermen’s Guild will offer a tasting of suquet de peix (Catalan fish stew), accompanied by a performance of havaneres by La Petita Havana. Tickets for the suquet will be available the same morning for €5, in front of Sant Pere Square.
